John Juniper and Jeff Solorio founded DITA in Los Angeles in 1995, drawing early silhouettes from the 1950s through to the 1980s. The vintage reference points gave the first collections their shape. The decision that shaped everything afterwards came next.
The founders moved production to Japan and invested directly in the craftspeople capable of meeting the standard they had in mind. Eyewear making arrived in the region in 1905, when Gozaemon Masunaga invited craftsmen from Osaka to teach the trade to local farmers. Fukui is rural and heavily snowbound in winter, and frame assembly gave families work through months when the land gave them none. Machine tooling brings a frame to shape and hands take it the rest of the way. Cutting, shaping and drilling establish the structure. Everything after that stage involves a person deciding when the work is finished, and that judgement is what the months are spent on.
Japanese acetate is polished using hand-cut bamboo chips, a method that sounds anachronistic until you handle the result. The chips tumble against the acetate and bring up a depth of finish that machine polishing flattens. It is slow, it cannot be rushed and it produces a surface that holds its clarity rather than dulling within a year.
Craftspeople assess each frame continuously through production rather than at a single checkpoint. They run their hands over the surfaces looking for the slightest imperfection or imbalance, and the frame moves forward only when they judge it right.
