PREMIUM LENSES

Hoya lenses, measured and fitted with clinical precision

Ocula optometrists fit the complete Hoya lens range across our Merivale, Wanaka, Arrowtown and Howick Village practices. Every pair starts with a detailed set of measurements taken in the consulting room, so your prescription becomes vision that feels natural from the first day of wear.

WHY HOYA

Japanese lens engineering, matched to precise in-practice measureme

Hoya has refined optical manufacturing for more than 60 years. Our optometrists apply that engineering to your eyes through a measured fitting process, recording where your pupils sit behind the frame, how the frame rests on your face and how you use your vision across a normal day.

Individually cut to your eyes

Freeform manufacturing allows Hoya to cut each lens surface to your exact prescription, which means the lens gets shaped point by point rather than ground to a standard curve. The calculation takes in your pupillary distance (the gap between the centres of your pupils), the shape of the frame you choose and the angle that frame sits at on your face.

Our optometrists record those measurements in practice before your order reaches the laboratory. Accurate figures at this stage give you sharper detail across the whole lens and less distortion when your eyes move towards the edges.

THE HOYA RANGE

A Hoya Lens for Every Vision Need

Progressive lenses

Progressive lenses correct near, intermediate and distance vision in a single lens with no visible dividing line. Hoya applies freeform surfacing to widen the corridor, the channel of clear vision running down the lens, which keeps the adaptation period short for most wearers.

Occupational lenses

Occupational lenses hold near and intermediate distances in comfortable focus for desk-based work. Our optometrists set them around your own working distances, from screen to keyboard to printed page, which reduces the neck and shoulder strain that comes from tilting your head to find a clear zone.

Sun & polarised lenses

Polarised lenses filter reflected glare from road surfaces, water and snow. Hoya builds full ultraviolet protection into the lens material, and we add tints or mirror finishes once your optometrist confirms the density suits your prescription and your daily exposure.

Single vision lenses

Single vision lenses correct one viewing distance across the full lens, covering short-sightedness, long-sightedness and astigmatism. Hoya aspheric designs, which flatten the lens profile, keep higher prescriptions thinner and hold detail steady towards the lens edge.

Advanced focus lenses

Advanced focus lenses support near vision for people who notice reading fatigue from their forties. A small amount of extra power at the base of the lens relieves the focusing effort, and most wearers adapt without the retraining a progressive lens can require.

Photochromic lenses

Hoya Sensity lenses darken outdoors and clear again indoors in response to ultraviolet light. One pair covers both settings, which suits patients who move between indoor work and outdoor activity through the day.

FOR GROWING EYES

Slowing myopia progression in children with Hoya MiYOSMART

Childhood myopia, or short-sightedness, is rising in New Zealand and internationally. MiYOSMART lenses use D.I.M.S. technology, a ring pattern of tiny lens segments that signals the eye to slow its growth, and they achieve this without patches, drops or contact lenses.

MiYOSMART lenses look like standard spectacle lenses and children wear them the same way. Our optometrists measure eye length at each review, so we track progression against data rather than prescription changes alone.

  • Clinically proven to slow myopia progression by up to 60%
  • Safe, lightweight, and impact-resistant for active kids
  • Works during all normal activities — no special handling required
  • Suitable for children aged 6 and above

DID YOU KNOW?

Half the world may be myopic by 2050

Researchers project that close to half the global population will be myopic by 2050. Starting management early gives your child more protected years, and our optometrists assess suitability during a standard eye examination.

Clinical Information

The information on this page is based on published clinical research and evidence. Individual results may vary, and your optometrist will recommend the most appropriate myopia management option based on your child’s individual needs.
